Parc Tondu Victorian Ironworks

One of the newest and most exciting attractions in the area is Tondu Park, the conserved structures of a former Victorian ironworks. This unique legacy of South Wales’ industrial revolution is one of the key sites for the interpretation of industrial heritage in Bridgend County Borough. Visitors to Tondu Park will be able to explore the Scheduled Ancient Monument, learn about iron making, enjoy the natural woodland and landscaped parkland setting, and attend a variety of public events.
Founded in 1838 by Sir Robert Price, this Scheduled Ancient Monument boasts some of the best preserved coke ovens and calcining kilns in the country as well as a unique and unusual lift tower. After falling into disrepair in the 1960s, the process of excavation and restoration began in 1995.
The ironworks brings alive the industrial history of the local area and Industrial South Wales, allowing visitors to take a closer look at the importance of iron and coal to the area and the effect that the demise of both products had.
The ironworks offers a fun and educational look into the history books and is a focal point for the exploration of Bridgend with excellent access to cycling and walking routes including the Celtic Trail.
Cyclists on the Celtic Trail, part of the National Cycle Network, will be able to branch off the main route to enjoy the park picnic area, off road mountain bike course as well as all the other facilities at the Park. The Education Resource Centre will be a valuable resource for the local community, schools and visitors, assisting in the interpretation and celebration of this major attraction.
There is ample car and coach parking and Tondu rail station is close at hand, offering access from Bridgend, Cardiff and Swansea.
